Say Goodbye to Hollywood
Harlotte is at the Table
Good Morning, Breakfastpoppers. Today is Sunday, September 24, 2017. Our creative friend, Spider Harlotte, is at the breakfast table this morning. She has prepared Egg Nog French Toast for all of us. I have brewed plenty of Irish Coffees to keep us happy throughout the day. Harlotte has decided to turn her back on Hollywood. Actors are playing the part of politicians, comedians are not very funny and the View makes her sick. Please join Harlotte and me this morning so that we can try and make sense of the insanity that is sweeping the nation. Come as quickly as you can. I'll leave the door open.
Thanks so much for joining us this morning. I may be losing my mind, but since when does the average American get their political information from the entertainment industry? When did Jimmy Kimmel become "a think tank" when it comes to our healthcare coverage? Once upon a time actors acted, comedians cracked us up, dancers danced and talk show people talked about make-up and diets. Now Joy Behar tells Americans how to feel and what to think about important issues she knows nothing about. She lambasts our president and is beyond nasty when it comes to our beautiful and intelligent First Lady. Mean spirits abound and stupidity reigns supreme. Frankly, it is getting very difficult to navigate the strange waters that are flowing through our nation. Say the wrong thing and you might get banished from a restaurant, snubbed at a party or spit on by a close family member. I now understand the meaning of "it's a jungle out there."
Free Speech Comes With a Price
I get it, I really do. This is, or was, a free country. We are allowed to protest, smash windows, and impose our impossible viewpoints on other people. Liberals are now leftists, leftists are now anarchists, Democrats are leftist liberals, Republicans are not leftists, but they aren't normal either. Our institutions of higher learning are now merely institutions. Conservative students transfer out of a school like Boston University because of death threats. Oberlin students say that bad grades are getting in the way of their activism. Members of the Young Americans for Liberty at Kellogg Community College are arrested for handing out pocket copies of the Constitution. Princeton University's campus newspaper disbands their editorial board because they published too many right-leaning opinions. Yale has decided to get rid of the term "freshman" because it is too gender specific and the Emmy's seemed like a painful exercise in intolerance, bad jokes and stupidity.
My fear is that the misinformed, uninformed, misguided and ridiculous are now the epitome of sanity and intelligence. They act like they rule the world, and many Americans agree. Hard as it is to believe, Jimmy Kimmel has clout. If he says he knows what's in the healthcare bill than we had better believe him. He is the man, and clowns like Whoopi Goldberg, Rob Reiner and Joy Behar are part of an elite band of people with too much access to the airwaves. What they say matters, because what they say reaches way too many people. If I spout off, like I am doing now, a few people read it. Some like what I say, others don't, but my impact is that of a gnat on an elephant. Hollywood is filled with people who get a load of free press. They are not intellectuals, they are not privy to the workings of government, and they really don't know what they are talking about. That's the part that really stings. I believe Kimmel's heart was in the right place at the wrong time, but he wasn't in possession of the facts. That didn't stop him from opining, and it didn't stop all the flakes on social media from throwing themselves at his feet. I don't know what is happening in our nation, but maybe we should check the water for hallucinogens.
I Have an Idea
Let me throw this thought out for a moment. If our colleges started teaching instead of indoctrinating. fertile minds, we might produce a generation of adults who want to hear both sides of any issue. Instead of crawling into a fetal position when a conservative viewpoint comes their way, imagine what it would be like if they pondered what was being said. If we graduated people ready to function like responsible citizens, Hollywood might not have such a moldable and gullible audience to speak to. If we graduated people who made it through college in four years without coloring books, they might not find Joy Behar so smart. In the meantime, I'll just say good-bye to Hollywood.
