Where Does Kamala Harris Live?
Everybody knows that the President of the United States lives in the White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. Joe Biden moved into the White House for his official residence and workplace after he was sworn in on January 20, 2021.
The Vice President works in her office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building (EEOB), located next to the West Wing on the White House premises. It is the Vice President’s Ceremonial Office used for meetings and press interviews.
Where does Kamala Harris live? She has three luxury residences, but she will not be living in any of them during the next four years.
Where the Vice President Lives
The Vice President does not live in the White House with the President for obvious reasons. They don't even travel together on the same airplane. Vice Presidents and their families used to live in their own houses. Congress agreed to designate a residence near the White House for Vice Presidents when it became a challenge to get private residences over the years.
Kamala Harris' New Address
Kamala Harris has made history as the first female Vice President to live in the three-story brick house with her husband, lawyer Douglas Emhoff.
The official residence for the Vice President is located on the northeast grounds of the United States Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., about 2.5 miles north of the White House. The address is 1 Observatory Circle. Every Vice President since Walter Mondale has lived there with their family. For privacy, the historic house is hidden from public view by shrubbery and doesn't offer public tours. Every Vice President of the United States since 1977 has lived there.
The house has a reception hall, sitting room, sun porch, dining room, living room, and a couple of bathrooms on the ground floor. The second floor has two bedrooms, a study, and a den. There are four bedrooms in the third-floor attic that was originally built for the staff and storage space. The kitchen, laundry room, and other storage rooms are located in the basement.
The 19th-century white brick bungalow that is set on 9,150 square feet is located on 12 of the Observatory's 72 acres. Even so, is Vice President Harris' new residence a downgrade from the residences she already has?
Kamala Harris' Three Residences
Kamala Harris, 56, has a very impressive real estate portfolio. In fact, some people refer to her real estate as "a mini-empire." She has two houses in California, her home state, and one in D.C., which are worth about $8 million.
San Francisco, California
Harris bought a condo in San Francisco, California, in 2004 for $489,000 when she became San Francisco's first Black attorney general. Since then, its value has nearly doubled to $890,000. The 1,000-square-foot loft is located in the city's South of Market neighborhood, home to SF MoMA and the headquarters of several tech companies, including Airbnb, Uber, and Salesforce.
Los Angeles, California
Harris and her 56-year-old husband, Douglas Emhoff, own a 3,500-square-foot house in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, where many celebrities live. Emhoff purchased the single-family house in 2012, two years before he married Kamala. After they were married, he transferred the house to a joint trust bearing both of their initials. The property was built in 1948 and has four bedrooms, four and a half baths, and a pool. It is now worth $5.05 million and rents for $20,000/mo, according to Zillow.
When Harris was elected to the Senate in 2017, she paid $1.775 million for a two-bedroom, 1,700-square-foot apartment in Washington's West End. The 71-unit Westlight complex is in a prime location with Georgetown on one side and Dupont Circle on the other side. The White House is only one mile away.
The apartment has everything that any resident would want. It has floor-to-ceiling windows that bring in natural light. Other amenities include a fitness center with Peloton equipment, a heated rooftop pool, housekeeping services, a 24-hour concierge, and a business center.
Where Did She Grow Up?
As a child, Kamala did not live in a house like the ones she has been living in as an adult. She lived with her single-parent mother along with her younger sister, Maya, on Milvia Street in central Berkeley, California.
The duplex seen in the photo above was located in the area referred to as "the flatlands" where black people lived.
