Brothers: New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and CNN Journalist Chris Cuomo

Margaret Minnicks has been an online writer for many years. She writes about interesting things.

The Cuomo Brothers

It is not unusual for family members to have similar careers. This article is about the two Cuomo brothers and their similar careers. Even though there is a 13 year age difference, some people get them mixed up because they look so much alike and they sound alike.

Andrew and Chris have three sisters: Maria, Margaret, and Madeline. Margaret Cuomo is a 65-year-old radiologist, author, philanthropist, and advocate. She specializes in issues related to cancer prevention.

The Cuomo family lives in New York. The patriarch of the family, Mario Matthew Cuomo, lived from June 15, 1932 to January 1, 2015. He served as the 52nd Governor of New York for three terms from 1983 to 1994. He died at the age of 82 of a heart condition. His death occurred just hours after his son Andrew was sworn into a second term as Governor of New York State. Andrew is the 56th Governor of New York.

Governor Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order requiring all non-essential businesses to close and to keep their employees home starting on March 22. The order also requires New Yorkers to avoid gathering in groups more than 10. They are also to avoid using public transportation unless it is absolutely necessary.

The governor also enacted "Matilda's Law." It is named for his mother with the goal of protecting vulnerable people, especially those over the age of 70. His mother is 88 years old.

Andrew Mark Cuomo

Andrew Mark Cuomo is a well-known American politician, author, and lawyer. Andrew has been in the national spotlight during the coronavirus pandemic. Business Insider polling indicates that he is one of the most trusted figures in the United States during the virus crisis. He is ranked much higher above President Donald Trump.

Governor Cuomo's state has been heavily affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. As of March 31, 2020, the governor said there were over 75,000 reported cases in the state including his younger brother Chris Cuomo. The number changes day by day.

Andrew has been serving as the 56th governor of New York since 2011. That is the same position his late father, Mario Cuomo, held for three terms as the 52nd governor of New York. According to The New York Times, it was the first time in New York's history that a father and son had both been elected governor. Therefore, Andrew is literally following in the footsteps of his father. However, his father never had to deal with the coronavirus like the current New York governor has to deal with it these days.

It is interesting that the current governor of New York has two biblical names: Andrew and Mark. Andrew was one of Jesus' twelve disciples. Mark is the writer of the first gospel that was written.

Christopher Charles Cuomo

Christopher Charles Cuomo is much younger than his well-known brother. Andrew is 62, and Chris is 49. Chris is a television journalist and is best known for his CNN primetime weeknight news analysis show, Cuomo Prime Time.

Chris has been covering the health crisis on CNN. Recently, he interviewed his own brother on the air to discuss COVID-19 with him.

Chris was previously co-anchor for ABC's 20/20. He was also ABC News chief law and justice correspondent. Until May 2018, Chris was one of the two anchors on New Day, a three-hour morning news show.

On March 31, 2020, CNN reported that Chris had been tested positive for the coronavirus. He continues to broadcast his show. Now he is doing it from his basement while he is being quarantined from his family and from others.

Thanks for this round up Margaret. The brotherly banter, rivalry and ribbing between the Cuomo brothers always makes me smile, but as necessry, there's a serious side too - so it's always interesting to watch their interviews on CNN.

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on April 01, 2020:

Thanks, Tim, for your comments. I just recently discovered they are brothers.

Tim Truzy from U.S.A. on April 01, 2020:

This is great, Margaret. I've watched Chris for years on CNN. I remember once he interviewed his brother, and his co-anchor said: "You two sound alike." Chris responded: "No way. My brother, strictly Queens. Not me." Of course, he chuckled. Nice facts about two well respected brothers. Thanks.
