What Is Air Pollution?

Air pollution means the contamination of the air we breathe with harmful substances. These pollutants come from vehicles, factories, power plants, industry, agriculture, homes, and more. Some common air pollutants include carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and many others. Exposure to these substances can be dangerous to people and wildlife.

Excessive levels of some types of air pollution can cause health problems such as heart disease, lung disease and cancer. Many people who are exposed do not get sick right away, but the particles in the air can lodge deep inside the lungs and cause serious health problems later on.

People who live with sources of air pollution are more likely to have respiratory illnesses than people who live farther away from these sources.

Air pollution also harms the environment by making it more difficult for nature to do its job. It can reduce the amount of light from the sun reaching the earth's surface and damaging plants and animals. It can also absorb heat from the air and release it again during colder times. This can cause damage to crops, kill animals and destroy forests.

Air pollution is caused by a variety of things, ranging from natural sources like wildfires to human activities like burning fossil fuels. In general, it occurs when there are too many harmful particles in the air. Here are 10 causes of air pollution:

1. Burning Fossil Fuels

The list of fossil fuels includes coal, natural gas, and oil. When burned, these materials release harmful chemicals and particles into the air, which can have a major impact on the environment and human health.

The burning of fossil fuels also contributes to climate change. These materials release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which trap heat and cause the Earth’s temperature to rise. This can lead to a number of devastating effects, including more extreme weather conditions, rising sea levels, and loss of wildlife.

4. Deforestation
