Sagging Pants Trend Came From Sexual Abuse of Black Men During Slavery

How can anyone feel good about temselves dressed like this?

Self resect is the issue

When I was a young girl in the 1960s the clothing fashions changed all the time. There were mini, midi, and maxi skirts, dresses, and coats, as well as hip hugger and bell-bottom pants.None of these styles lasted longer than a decade but there is a fashion statement today that has been around for 30 years. When sagging pants began some school administrators did not allow it and you certainly could not get a decent job by dressing that way. Today you can go to convenience stores, or restaurants and see the crack of the behinds of men and women and they seem to ave no shame. Society used to laugh at what was called the plumber's look but a few years ago a television commercial actually showed the butt cracks of the actors as if it were a joke. The root of the issue is having no self-respect and if you do not care about your own image you will not resect others. I can recall a day where you were taught to dress for success on a job interview and children wore their Sunday Best for church or school plays. Today everyone does what they want to do and it is decreasing the values in society. The root of sagging pants is pretty brutal and you can read the detail and see the evidence by clicking on the following link.

It's generational with children of the original saggers now following in their parents' footsteps.

Slavery

It was bad enough that Africans were captured or sold into slavery by their own people. It is revolting to think of the good Christian Plantation owner sitting in church on Sunday mornings but possibly that night raping and impregnating an innocent slave girl. The idea of grown men being raped in;public and forced to wear their pants sagging is disgusting. I don't know how anyone can continue wearing sagging pants after knowing this truth. The fact that this style has been around for 3 decades says something about the mentality of society and how we have failed our young people. When I was a teen in the 1970's we worked during the summer in order to purchase our own Today there are no after school or summer jobs and children are not learning self worth. i encounter more parents cursing in front of children and today an older woman was using derogatory language inside a store and seemed to not care that my grandchildren were nearby. Young women show all of their breasts except the nipple and underwear, bras. and slips seem to be a thing of the past. The longevity of sagging pants is an indicator that those who wear them are embracing another form of slavery.

My grandma said it looked like they ave a load in their underpants.

Humiliation

Try to consider how humiliating it must have been for these Africans in America to be treated so shamelessly. Any human being deserves so much better than this and if you descended from enslaved Africans you should not be sagging because it is disgraceful. Why promote a style that came about because your ancestors were sexually violated in addition to being forced into slavery? There should not have to be a ban on this style because young people should be able to realize on their own how ugly it is. I've seen young men and women trying to hold their pants up while walking which is easily dealt with by wearing clothing that fits. Why don't designers not give young people options by creating a new and different style? Why are employers allowing this foolishness into their businesses? These two issues being addressed would stop sagging in its tracks because banning the fashion is seen as violating rights. This has gone on too long and needs to stop. We need to assist our young people in believing in themselves and wanting to choose to look their best.

Cheryl, you did an excellent job explaining the trend of wearing sagging pants. The photos are ideal that go along with your article. The sagging pants look uncomfortable to wear.
