Christianity Has a Lot to Answer For

An interest in God and religion dominated Tessa Schlesinger's life for half a century. A decade ago she walked away to become an atheist.

The ancient Hittites had 1000 gods. The Hindus have somewhere around 40 to 60. Christians have three. All of them are fiction.

The Wrong Diagnosis. God Will Not Solve the Problems.

It is a fact of life that if a wrong diagnosis is given, then the treatment that follows is wrong as well. Therefore, if a god does not exist, it goes without saying that all religions have wrongly advised billions of people throughout history. It goes much further than that, though.

Christianity denies science but uses it all the time.

False Hope and False Promises

Various studies have shown that poverty drains the ability to be able to get oneself out of poverty. Dean Spears of Princeton University has shown that financial stress affects the ability to think clearly. It is one of several reasons that once one is poor there is very little chance of ever removing oneself from that demographic. That is why it is called the poverty trap.

It is no coincidence that when people are in desperate straits, if there is no government social welfare system, then they will turn to ‘God.’ The reason why fewer people believe in God in the first world (outside the United States) is because there are well established social systems in place for those who need medical care, financial system, or any other form of assistance.

When well-meaning Christians tell their desperate friends that they will pray for them, they are not offering anything of value. It is, in effect making them believe that help is forthcoming when it is not. More than that, it lets the people who say that they will pray for those who are struggling off the hook. More to the point, there is no help forthcoming. Help only comes in the form of people.

A better way to resolve the problem would have been to provide the money or organise a way for that person to earn the money.

Teaching people that prayer is an acceptable way to solve the problems is dangerous to the survival of the community because in the longer term, vital problems are not resolved. It, therefore, has a detrimental effect on society. It is, for instance, the reason that citizens in Israel, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and western Europe have a far better quality of life than in the United States where citizens are forced to depend on prayer.

Why God Does Not Answer Prayer

The Second Coming and Climate Change

A recent study showed that Christians believing in the second coming were less likely to be concerned about climate change because they thought that Jesus was coming to rescue the earth. Therefore they did not have to use less fossil fuel, stop consuming so much, or waste less.

When there is no god, and when entire communities are taught that they do not need to do something because their god will rescue them, again it puts the community in danger. In the current situation, with climate change increasing in its intensity, it is nothing short of murder. It will end in the extinction of mankind, not because there is a god coming to rescue humanity, but because great numbers of human beings were brainwashed by the Christian church to believe in a God of Thor-like heroism who will come to rescue ‘his people.

Gods are Forged of Scarcity and Strife

Endless War, Persecution, and Torture

Christianity has been responsible for the cruel and torturous deaths of millions of people the world over. This spans the Crusades, the Inquisitions, the savagery of the Conquistadors towards the Atzec people, and more. As with Islam, the Christian banner has taken the offensive when seeking to forcibly convert those who preferred to believe in their own gods than take on new ones.

The Crusades began in 1095 when Pope Urban 11 wished to re-unite the eastern and western branches of Christianity which had been split in 1054. His success led to other crusades, and for the next 700 years, bloodshed soared as Christians used blunt force to take lands from other communities and nations and forcibly try to convert their populations to Christianity.

The Spanish Inquisition was established in 1478 by the Spanish Monarchy in order to convert Jews and Muslims to Christianity. If they chose not to convert, they were tortured to death and their properties confiscated. There were other inquisitions as well. There were the Medieval Inquisition, the Roman Inquisition, and the Portuguese Inquisition.

Modern Christian terrorism has come about as a result of the gradual decline of Christianity and the increasing loss of status by those who once saw themselves as top of the pecking order. However, it started a long time ago, and includes the Gunpowder plot of 1605, the pogroms, the Ku Klux Klan, and the Ilaga.

Christians continue to persecute those who do not live according to the Christian creed. This includes the gay community, those who undertake abortion, and those who follow other religions.

Science contradicts the bible because it's historically untrue.

Christianity Promotes Magical Thinking

Magical thinking is the process of connecting two unrelated events to each other. So, for instance, it would be magical thinking to believe that walking under a ladder or seeing a black cat will bring bad luck. There is no causal link between these two.

Prayer is a form of magical thinking. If one speaks to an invisible being for which there is no evidence, then that invisible being will provide prayer. There is a great deal of cognitive dissidence in this area as those who advocate prayer will strongly declare that god healed their cancer when, in reality, the doctor did (using medical science).

There is a study that shows that people who have been taught to believe in god have greater difficulty in separating fact from fiction.

Why Christianity Bears More Responsibility than Other Religions.

Ironically, Christianity itself gives the reason why it is more responsible for still misleading vast numbers of people in insisting there is a god once had a conversation with a snake, then produced a son through a virgin, then killed him off in order to fix up the people he purposely made evil. (Born in sin.)

There is a principle that one is more responsible for an event if one had the power to stop it than if one didn’t have the power to stop it. The same principle advocates that one is more responsible if one has the opportunity of knowing something, but declines to know it. And lastly, if one does know something and one does nothing about it in the face of all evidence that what one knows is true, then one is guilty.

The Enlightenment of the 18th century began the journey of science and technology by blatantly denying claims of the Church/Christianity. By doing that, it became evident that people died from infections (germs, viruses, bacteria, etc.) and not because god was punishing someone because he wore breeches instead of a toga. Or to give the modern translation to that, gays are allowed to marry.

By promoting magical thinking, Christianity is teaching people not to reason acccurately. This leads to erroneous decisions based on faulty information at a time when our world is facing disasters that may lead to the extinction of the human race within the next century.

Something Incredible Must Have Happened for Me To Leave Christianity!

What do you believe?

Solving the Real Problems

It is no coincidence that the more highly educated and the more intelligent one is, the more one is likely to be an atheist, and the less educated and the less intelligence one is, the more likely one is to have religious beliefs. That’s because more highly educated, more intelligent people generally have much better jobs than those who aren’t. Effectively, religious belief starts with poverty, results in ignorance, and ends with despair.

At the present time, it will end with the extinction of humankind within the next century.

Christianity has a lot to answer for.

In other words Diane, you don't have the knowledge at your fingertips to rebutt any of this. You assume I know nothing about Christianity. I was an evangelical Christian for 10 years, and it destroyed my life. I also spent 5 years at a Christian boarding school, plus 2 years converting to Judaism, plus 10 years studying comparative religion, etc. You have no idea of the degree of my knowledge and experience. I used to spend hours every day in prayer, plus I once spent 18 months reading the bible from Genesis Chapter One to Revelations Chapter 22 18 times. In other words, I read the entire bible 18 times in 18 months. I also spent ten years studying the bible. I have read hundreds of Christian books while I was a believer.

So, no, I don't want to discuss it.The fact that you have avoided the actual topics I spoke about and simply fell back on a piece of Christian propaganda "You can't judge Christianity on the evil of those who don't live a Christian life" is indicative of the fact that you cannot in anyway rebutt what I have said.

To respond to everything you have here in a coherent and organized manner would take a lot of time. It would take a lot of time and have to be done over a longer period of time.

I wouldn't mind discussing smaller segments individually if you were open to that. I don't argue with anybody about anything. If you'd like to discuss specific points, I'm open. The easiest one to address was the issue of Christians praying and doing nothing to help people.

You still don't get what I am saying. Christianity - the stuff that the bible is teaching is destroying the world. Clearly, you either don't understand what I wrote, or you didn't read it. You don't mention a single point about the historical events. This has nothing to do with whether Christians are following the bible or not. What I am saying is that the bible, Jesus, God, etc. are a load of bollocks and it is responsible for misleading many people. Please read the hub before saying anything further and stay on topic.

Again, people can say they are Christians but anyone can make that claim. The divorce rate for professing in regular church attendance than those who say they are Christians but show no evidence. https://winteryknight.com/2017/07/21/do-atheists-h...

I don't know what percentage of the population claims to be atheists; however, the percentage is based on the size of the group. Many people don't get married - they live together. The commitment for long term is not there. Unfortunately, here in the US, people that love each other have children together. It results in a mother having multiple kids by different fathers. The result, is poverty, less emphasis on education, high crime and a very unhealthy living environment.

People have a just to believe or not believe in God. He never forces anyone.

      G. Diane Nelson Trotter For your information, atheists have less divorce, a lot fewer people in prison (per capita), are the most educated (study to show yourselves approved), a lot more intelligent, and virtually everything you use in the modern world (your computer, electricity, medical science, etc.) was discovered and created by atheists.

My article does not say that all Christians are bad people. It says that Christianity is bad (like any other religion) because it misleads people to believe that there is a god, and therefore it stops people from getting real help.

Tess, the problem is not God or Christianity. The problem is people coming up with their own version that is compatible with their lifestyles and goals.

There are many Bible Scriptures that tell of people helping other people and it is what God expects.

There are many people with fake testimonies.

      Faith and Works James 2:15-17

…15Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. 16If one of you tells him, “Go in peace; stay warm and well fed,” but does not provide for his physical needs, what good is that? 17So too, faith by itself, if it is not complemented by action, is dead.

God wants us to use our talents and abilities to help others.

Christians are to pray continuously while helping.

Christians aren't perfect. We are suppose to grow in our relationship with God every day through prayer and reading God's Word and then applying it.

I'm sorry I wrote so much. I was attempting to address some of the issues you stated.

      God bless!
